Live: Slothrust at The Novo
Grunge trio Slothrust performed last night in Downtown LA’s The Novo, supporting hard rock band Highly Suspect on their MCID tour. Guitarist/vocalist Leah Wellbaum, bassist Kyle Bann, and drummer Will Gorin kicked off the set with metal-inspired instrumental “Surf Goth” followed by “Birthday Cake” and “Peach” from their 2018 LP The Pact. Their set also included back-to-back covers of Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy” and Bobby Darin’s “Splish Splash,” which Wellbaum made her own with her signature deadpan delivery. The trio was engaging and versatile, seamlessly incorporating elements of jazz, r&b, punk, and blues as they bounced from playful single “Double Down” to introspective oldie “Horseshoe Crab.” Their high energy took a backseat only during the band’s reworked piano ballad “On My Mind,” after which Wellbaum joked, “That last song was written about your mom.” The band ended their set on a high note with Pixies-esque anthem “Crockpot.”
